kernelgarage.com is an independent, self-hosted project run by kernelgarage. You can reach us at [email protected]. This site runs on our own server (Dokku, on a VPS hosted by Hetzner), behind Cloudflare, which all traffic passes through for HTTPS and DDoS protection — we don't use Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or any other third-party tracker, we don't use cookies at all, and we don't sell data to anyone.
Anonymous page views, clicks, and votes (always on, no consent needed). We log which pages get viewed and which links get clicked (e.g. "visited /", "clicked youtube") to understand what people actually care about here, and we use the same anonymous identifier to stop the same visitor voting twice on a topic. By default, a random id is generated fresh every time you open this site and is never written to storage — one visit can't be linked to another, and (if you haven't accepted below) a refresh gets a new id, so it's possible to vote again after refreshing. We also store a one-way hash of your IP address alongside each vote, as a secondary signal for investigating abuse — we never store your raw IP address. If you arrived via a link from one of our social bios (e.g. one tagged ?src=youtube), we log which platform sent you, as part of that same anonymous pageview.
Remembering your browser (only if you accept). If you accept in the cookie banner, that same id is also written to your browser's local storage (not a cookie) and reused across visits, so we can tell returning visitors from new ones — and so a vote you've already cast keeps counting as already cast, even after a refresh. Nothing else about what we collect changes — only whether your visits are linked. It's never on until you say yes, and you can withdraw at any time (see below), which deletes the stored id immediately.
We don't require accounts, names, or email addresses to vote or browse this site. We don't build cross-site advertising profiles. We don't sell data. The anonymous identifier is used only for the purposes stated above — never repurposed for anything else.
Vote records are kept for as long as the voting feature is running, since deleting them would just let the same visitor vote again. Page view and click events are kept to track trends over time — there's no fixed deletion schedule for these today. Nothing here is ever sold, and all of it can be deleted early on request (see below).
This site is served from a personal VPS hosted by Hetzner, behind Cloudflare — all traffic is routed through Cloudflare first, which gives us HTTPS and DDoS protection. Hetzner and Cloudflare, as infrastructure providers, can see connection metadata like your IP address, but neither has access to vote records or analytics events, and neither is used for tracking. Actions that change data (like adding a new topic to vote on) require a separate access key that's never exposed to visitors.
If you're in the EU, EEA, or Norway, you have rights under the GDPR: access to your data, correction, erasure, restriction, objection, and portability. In practice, since we don't collect names or emails, exercising these requires you to tell us your id value (open your browser's dev tools → Application → Local Storage → kg-client-id, if you accepted — if you didn't, we have no way to look you up, since nothing was ever stored) so we can find the right records — email us at [email protected]. You can also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority — in Norway, that's Datatilsynet.
You can turn this on or off at any time. .
This site and its voting feature are provided as-is, with no uptime guarantee — we may change, pause, or discontinue either at any time. This site is governed by the laws of Norway.
